I know it is a cliche but it is a truth, so here I go: Time flies and in this case, has flown. 27 May 2011 (Friday) came and went. Insignificant as yet another 24 hours but when one was counting his time, another day passing me by was twenty-four hours slipping through my fingers.
I was pleasantly surprised to be given an attendance list of parents and their children (my 3D students). Years from now, if I had had still enough left of my grey matter to reflect on the better things that I had done with my life or if my fingers were still able to type on the standard keyboard, I should be able to savour the words and the text which am living behind this morning for myself as I await the break of dawn (now the time is 4:46 a.m.- not that I really have to be that exact, but still...) to take me and my colleagues at St. Hilda's Secondary School to Johore Bahru, on Day Two of our Staff Retreat. Day One, was to be honest, a total wreckage for me, not for the lack of trying but because it was really nothing to be learnt from it. But I should be able to appreciate the efforts of my collleagues better only perhaps, many years from now.
Let me get back to 27 May 2011. Singlehandedly, I was very happy to have met Zhao Yu Qi and her pei-du ma ma (I was sorry I didn't get her name) who was my first visitors right on the dot at 12 noon. Then I met Ang Wei Jun and his father, Mr. Ang Lee Choon. I also spoke to Leong Wei Ren and his mother, Madam Wang Heng Nuan. Tan Say Kiat came along with his mother, Madam Linda Luah while Germaine took her mother, Ms Mindy along with her. I was pleased that Hazmie showed up with Madam Kamilah and Colin Giam took both his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Giam Peck Wei along with him. I did hope I had been fair with my comments, advice or even suggestions for my students and their parents.
My single most challenging parent of the day would have to be Mr. Kelvin Lim who was quite serious when he asked me for a personalised solution in helping Lim Qian Xin improve his grades for English Language. I hoped he was satisfied with the work I had done for Hildans with my network of revision blogs, parked under the main blog - http://www.nekosan-nekosan.blogspot.com/. I was rather pleased with myself because I needed to be really patient when any parent got impatient. I could understand parental anxiety in seeking real assistance from their children's teachers if everything else they might have tried at home seemed to have failed in helping them with their children's school work. Still, I advocate patience here because collaboration is the key here.
I was glad to again meet Mr. Richard Foo and his son, Clement. Benedict Ang, my favourite student, showed up with his equally amiable father, Mr. Peter Ang. I was also pleased with Alysha Qistina for taking her mother, Madam Hayati Jaafar along with her. Mr. Rosll (I hope I've gotten his name right) Ahmad is the proud father of my class chairperson, Nik Fahmie. He reminds me of a Malay television celebrity I sometimes glimpse in the Suria Channel. Although Vaiyatheesh did not turn up, I had finally met her mother, Miss Vijaya, who told me a surprising news: her daughter was not returning to school to finish off her studies this year. I wish Vaiyatheesh and all my other students all the best in the things they have set their minds to do this June vacation.
